Made this quilt in 2016 using Lori Holt's snowman block, now found in her Vintage Christmas book.

Sweeping through Super Bowl Sunday With my Free Broom Pattern!

Ready, Set, HUT!

Cutting instructions for One Broom
I cut some pieces larger than necessary and trim at the end.
Background:
Cut (2) 1-1/4" x 2-1/2"
Cut (2) 1-1/2" x 5-1/2"
Cut (2) 3/4" squares
Cut (1) 1-1/4" x 3"
Broom Handle:
Cut (1) 1" x 5-1/4"
Broom Band:
Cut (1) 3/4" x 1"
Bristle Band:
Cut (1) 3/4" x 2"
Broom Bristles:
Cut (1) 1-1/4" x 2"
Cut (1) 1-3/4" x 2"

1.
Sew the broom band to one end of the broom handle.
I chain piece when i can...Press towards the band.

2.
With right sides together sew a 1-1/2" x 5-1/2" background rectangle to both sides of the broom handle.
Once both background sides are stitched onto the broom handle, press toward the handle.  I do this to create a little extra poof to handle!
The broom handle part is finished, set aside.

3.
Draw diagonal lines on the wrong side of each 3/4" squares. Right sides together, place each on opposite corners of the 1-1/4" x 2" broom bristle as shown below. Sew directly on the drawn lines.  Flip and press.  I do not trim behind the corner triangles.  *A new sharp needle helps when sewing these tiny squares.

4.
Sew the bristle band to the bottom of the unit above and press towards the band

5.
Right sides together, sew the larger broom bristle piece to the bottom of the unit from step 4.
Notice in the picture below how close i need to stitch to the pressed bristle band.
Press seam towards band.  Both seams will overlap.  Again, this creates a little fullness in the band.

6.
Trim the top of the broom FIRST without trimming into the corner triangles.  Just even it up.

Then trim the bottom edge.  Unit will measure 2-3/4" long x approx. 3" wide.  Don't trim the width yet.

7.
Finger press both the broom handle and the broom bristle piece to determine the centers.  With right sides together match the centers, pin and sew the handle to the broom.  *I take a larger basting stitch first to make sure i have the centers even.  Then I stitch into place.  Press this seam open

8.
Add the final background 1-1/4" x 3" piece to the top of the broom stick.

Press well.  I love Best Press

Now for the trimming.  The completed 'unfinished' broom block will measure 2-1/2" x 8-1/2" when trimmed.

Once the right side has been trimmed, turn the broom and trim the opposite side.  Again, line the 1" ruler mark on the broom handle and the 2-1/2" line should rest on the previously trimmed edge.

Lastly, trim the top of the broom so the entire length of the broom block measures 8-1/2".  This completes this cute little broom!

I decided to make enough brooms to border my 9 snowmen.  This required 4 extra 2-1/2" unfinished blocks...typically placed in each corner.  I decided to place mine a bit differently as shown in a few pictures below.

For my 2-1/2" blocks, i cut (4) 1-1/2" squares out of a variety of handle fabrics and (4) 1-1/2" background squares.

First i made a 4-patch with handle fabrics.  I drew diagonal lines on each background squares and created corner triangles in each corner of the 4-patch.  *Press each corner triangle before adding the next one.  I did not trim the excess fabric.

I placed 2 of the small blocks between a couple brooms and 2 on opposite corners of the quilt.

Of course, i would love to see what you do!

Happy February!!

Start your month out yummy!

My snowmen had to take a little unexpected break these past couple weeks.  Offering Free Farmer's Wife classes in January kept me hopping!

Two more brooms to go...and i'll stitch this cuteness together!

Since my sweetest little Lucky Dog is no longer sitting by my side helping me with my quilting...especially with my Farmer's Wife quilts...

i've had to settle for Ms. Pig Popper to keep me company.
No replacement for my Lucky...but what a great toy!!!  I'm going to order a couple 'Love Poppers'...a Valentine gift for my sons! Lol!
